Gosh, what's that? Cryptor-what???
Hang on....read the story first....
CP was so afraid of stressing Blackie further, she brought Blackie in the trap, covered by this piece of cloth. I carried the trap inside the clinic and we waited for the vet to advise the next step.
The vet said we'd do it one step at a time. Lift the cloth first and let him familiarise himself with the clinic environment, the sights and the sounds.
There are definitely some old wounds on the face, given that Blackie is a street-fighter. The scratches from last night were very minimal but there were blood stains.
Hey you, with the bright eyes. You'll be okay, don't worry.
Blackie is obviously so terrified. He was so quiet. CP said he'd been like that since last night. Not a sound, but he finally ate the fried fish. That sure helps reduce our guilty feelings a wee bit....at least he ate the fish.
The vet said it's best to leave him in the trap and not transfer him out since he is calm now. He'll probably sedate him from the outside, then take him out and do the castration. He'll treat the wounds with iodine and check what else needs to be done.
No visible major injuries. Just some old wounds, probably from fights.
On the way up, Blackie urinated. Oh oh....not very good. It doesn't smell at all and it's very dilute. That could indicate kidney problems. Cat urine is SUPPOSED to stink and is concentrated. So, if your cat's urine stinks, it's a good sign.
Sometimes we see stray cats on the street and they look perfectly healthy. But we wouldn't really know. They may have AIDS or leukemia (which is so common amongst the strays), they may have mange, or kidney problems, or so many other problems. Hence, spay-neuter and help control the population.
We thank CP for her kind donation to our fund. It will go towards helping the next animal who comes along.
UPDATES: The vet just called me. Upon examination, Blackie is a "cryptorchid". This means one of his testicles is inside the body. This would require surgery and not your normal castration. They have sedated Blackie and surgery is in progress now. I have informed CP. Any surgery is a risk, so please do send positive thoughts to Blackie.
From Wikipedia:
Cryptorchidism is derived from the Greek words "crypto" (meaning "hidden") and "orchid" (meaning "testicle"). During the last century, cryptorchidism was sometimes restricted to the subset of undescended testes that were not palpable above the scrotum or in the inguinal canal — those that were truly hidden in the abdomen or completely absent. In recent decades the distinction is no longer made in most contexts, and the two terms are used interchangeably.Cryptorchism is an older variant of the same term.
Updates: Surgery done successfully. Discharge this evening. Vet's advice is to best keep confined overnight, but can also be released if need be.
