One day at an Indiana animal shelter, Jessica Petalas was working when she was introduced to a mini poodle puppy named Rusty who had just been dropped off for allegedly going to the bathroom indoors.
“He shook uncontrollably and his red curly hair was kinked and matted under his belly,” Jessica said. “For a dog that was just given up for not being potty trained, he was severely skittish and flinched when large objects would move quickly in his direction. I felt horrible. I watched the little pup assess us all as possible threats and recoil into the shelter director’s shoulder.”
As the day went on and Jessica was busy with her duties, her mind kept wandering to Rusty who surely would struggle in a shelter environment because of his fearful nature.
“I decided to go take another peek,” Jessica said. “I peered around the corner and saw the pup cowering in the corner. I walked in and he just stared at me. My boss went to pick him up, and much to his dismay, Rusty literally leaped into my arms. I held him tight and hoped he understood he was safe. He stopped shaking. He wouldn’t go to anyone but me. He stole my heart.”
“He’s been my little buddy ever since. He is now very social and loves being around people. He even barks at strangers! The brave little thing. He is my sweet little Rusty Roo, my pumpkin pie.”
