All this while, Thong-koon has been very active and provided loving care to her 9 puppies. My initial plan was to have Thong-koon sent to the vet on Saturday (22ndMarch) for spaying. However, I was very busy with my own chores and I could not make it that day. I therefore made up my mind that Thong-koon would be sent to the vet on Monday (24thMarch) instead.

On 22ndMarch, I went to the temple as usual in the late evening. I noticed that Thong-koon was very quiet and did not show appetite when I offered her food and there was also left over food. At first, I thought that Thong-koon was full and that was why she ignored mine. At around 8pm, suddenly Thong-koon started making noise, became restless and had difficulty in breathing while I was busy feeding puppies. I was taken a back and looked at her closely, then decided to call the vet hospital. I had to try a few times before I could get an appointment. Without any assistance, I scooped Thong-koon into my arms and quickly sent her to the hospital.

At the hospital, the vet quickly assessed the condition and advised for chest X-ray to rule out lung infection but turned out to be normal. The vet did a throat x-ray which also showed no sign of obstruction. At this point, I requested the vet to give some initial support treatment since Thong-koon was in an uncomfortable condition.

After consulting the senior vet, a full blood count was taken to rule out the level of calcium in the blood. This is because Thong-kooon has many puppies to look after and this is a crucial time for lactating mother. While waiting for the results, IV drip with calcium was given and Thong-koon stayed overnight at the hospital. The blood results showed very low level of calcium in her blood. Before I left the hospital, the vet warned me that Thong-koons condition was grave and that she might develop seizure later during the night. The vet further said that if there was an untoward incidence then I would definitely receive a call. I went back to the temple and continued feeding other dogs with mixed feelings.

On 23rdMarch, I went to visit Thong-koon and I was so relieved to see her back to her normal condition again. The vet sent for the 2ndblood test for calcium and we would know the result on the following day. By then, Thong-koons appetite was also normal.

On 24thMarch, Thong-koon was transferred to the vet clinic in Puchong. The vet told me that Thong-koon suffered fromHypocalcemia due to Milk Feverand it is commonly seen among mother dog with many puppies. The vet further told me that without immediate treatment, she could have developed seizure and respiratory arrest. Thong-koon was kept for observation another day or two before spaying. I also received the 2ndnormal blood result for calcium from the vet hospital.

On 1stApril, Thong-koon was taken back to the temple and she clearly showed signs of happiness when united with her 6 puppies. This is the first ever emergency case study that I have come across in lactating canine. Ever since this experience, calcium supplement has been constantly kept in my car!!!
