Protecting Ukrainian Animals From Fire Bombing

WE’RE FUNDING SECURITY GUARDS AFTER AFTER MEN TRIED TO SET FIRE TO KIEV ANIMAL SHELTER
This month we have a special role to safeguard animals in the Ukraine. Dangers abound for the Shelter Kiev SOS as political violence has not only spilled over into the shelter- but it has become a direct target by arsonists.
The shelter’s founder Tamara Tarnawka is a journalist and is now on the ‘enemies list’ of those loyal to ousted dictator Janukovych. She’s been attacked on the street, her car was torched and they tried to burn down her apartment building. Now, they’ve thrown Molotov cocktails over the wall of the animal shelter.
Thank God the women who work at the shelter were able to extinguish the fire. But they are afraid to stay at the shelter overnight and more than a thousand animals here are vulnerable.
Harmony Fund has dispatched funds for nighttime security guards and old tires have been embedded in the ground around the perimeter of the shelter to stop cars from speeding by and hurling fire over the walls. But food is also dwindling here again and we really need to send more funds for kibble and quickly.
These are very hard times and Tamara is afraid for her life and that of the animals. She said, “I feel stronger just knowing that
somewhere, someone is thinking about us and wants to help.”
