CLEVER RESCUERS GENTLY SAVE BEAR WHO FELL DOWN A WELL
Last week a young sloth bear in India was foraging for food when he fell down a deep well in village of Belgumba. There was three feet of water in the well and the bear had no way to climb up again as villagers had gathered and were shouting and throwing rocks at the petrified bear.
After many tense hours of trying to calm and control the crowd, volunteers finally succeeded in dispersing the onlookers. Tranquilizing the bear in the water was out of the question as he would have drowned, so they opted for a more clever escape route according to the Bangalore Mirror.
The rescuers tied two ladders tied together to make a 35 foot long route for the bear to follow. Then they piled coconut palms to create a hiding spot on the ‘shelf’ that was about half way up the well. Then volunteers spread large portions of jackfruit (a sloth bear favorite!) from the shelf all the way up to the top of the well.
A full 10 hours later, under the cover of darkness, the bear summoned his courage and began to climb straight for the jackfruit. And by 1 am, he finally surfaced and scampered away.
All this bear needed was a little time and patience and a safe way out. Huge thanks to the volunteers who were smart enough to think like a bear and provide the gentlest and safest way to restore his freedom.
