Hi Dr Chan,

My name is Jay Wong, I learned about sporo in cats through a friend and she showed me this link - http://myanimalcare.org/2014/03/07/tiger-has-sporotrichosis/ which are many sporo cases updated in your website. I rescued cats and the number increase to 20, it’s not a big problem, until I rescue 3 sporo cats.

I rescued the first one in end Dec 2013, after 2 weeks medication (the original itraconazole sporanox) his sneezing stops, after 1 month treatment, his wounds mostly dried up. Then later I saw another 2 stray cats I’ve been feeding outside show the symptoms too, so I took them in. These 2 only have mild infection.

Now my problem is, if I put them inside the cage (separate cages), and let my other cats walk near them, would the fungus transfer to my other cats via airborne spores? Does sporotrichosis transmitted that way too besides from scratches and cuts? I’m very worried that my 20 cats will get it, because just by treating these 3 the bills is very high already.

I’d be very grateful if you could share some info with me. Many many thanks.

(Attached is the picture of the first rescued, which is very severe case, he improves tremendously, but recently showing signs of relapse.)

Hi Dr. Chan,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply, I really appreciate it.

Yes, of course you may publish this email as a sharing on your website. In fact, the sporo stories on your website give me a lot of positive vibes, most of the vets would only tell negative stories. The 1st severe sporo cat I rescued, you can see more of his pictures here - https://www.facebook.com/JayOwl/media_set?set=a.10151965980958929.1073741844.542383928&type=3

Thank you very much.

Regards,
Jay Wong

As far as we have been told, sporotrichosis transmits through the air and through open wounds or the mucous membranes. The spores are also lodged in the deep muscle so the treatment is long term and relapses are common.
