The past few weeks, we had been focusing on enrichment’s for our tortoises, This week however, ACRES volunteers helped to put together 3 sets of floating barges with some scrap wood/materials to provide our Giant Asian pond turtles with new dietary/play enrichment. The barges challenge the turtles to climb and be more mobile to get to the food. These guys are nocturnal, so the video has to be taken early in the morning when they are still relatively active. This various methods of enrichment’s are focused on providing the animals under our care with new and different things to do, ultimately increasing their activity level. To put it in perspective, Andrea, our Giant Asian pond turtle took about 2-3 minutes to consume part of her food in the video footage. If the food had been presented to her on the ground, she would have consumed everything in less than 1 minute. Enrichment’s are a way to keep them busy and to encourage them to figure out their environments.
