WOMAN RESCUES CALF & ARRANGES PROSTHETIC HOOVES
A calf from Virginia will soon be living a normal, happy life after begin outfitted with prosthetic hooves. Perfectly named Hero, he was taken to the Texas A&M University in November.
Hero’s owner, Kitty Martin discovered him last winter, freezing in a field. He was in terrible shape then, as he had lost his back hooves to frostbite.
Hero was left in critical condition. The efforts to save him were undertaken right away. Martin, who took to the calf immediately, helped perform the surgery right next to veterinarians.
Fortunately, the procedure was successful with two inches of his back legs removed to accommodate the prosthetics. Hero’s tendons were later brought around so his bones wouldn’t touch the new legs.
He is now spending his final days at the university and it’s only for the recovery process. He’s walking, chewing cud and growing just fine.
The good natured, calm calf should get to live a perfectly normal life, with the woman who saved him. Martin stated “If it was just any cow that was raised on a farm, maybe I wouldn’t have done it. But I felt sorry for this calf and it was his sweet nature that got me into this.”
