PEACOCK’S FEET FROZE TO A PINE TREE!

A 5-year-old peacock named Blue was rescued by firefighters near Chicago, Illinois after he took flight from his heated enclosure and landed in a nearby pine tree.

The West Dundee Fire Department brought in a 100 foot ladder and Assistant Zoo Manager Kristin Wuestenfeld ascended the tree with them in the basket atop the ladder. She carefully worked to warm and release Blue’s feet which had frozen to the branch in the -12 stinging cold.

“The bird’s feet were pretty cold. We more or less warmed the feet, got his legs working again and now he’s under watch in another heated building for quarantine,” said Brian Mangiaracina of Randall Oaks’ Barnyard Zoo.

Blue, who was born at the zoo and has known no other home, will also receive antibiotics to prevent fluid from building up in his lungs.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
