DOG FINDS ORPHANED BABY SKUNK & SAVES A LIFE

Thanks to the help of her dog Ella, Sharon Johnston of Long Beach, California found this baby skunk. When no mother came to retrieve the little one, Sharon wisely called in the professionals.

“I don’t know what happened to her mom,” said Sharon who also rescues birds impaled by fish hooks and debilitated by discarded fishing line. “Long Beach is a beach town but we are not only blessed with an ocean of sea life and the inhabitants of the local wetlands we have a nature preserve within city limits. Even though this is a residential neighborhood skunks, coyotes, ducks all wander freely through the streets. I suspect the mother was killed by a car or predator of some sort and that left the baby alone or the little one got separated from the group and hid behind the rock until found.”

This skunk was cleaned and sent to a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator until she is ready to return to the wild. Sharon was truly moved by the compassion of the animal control officer who came out to help and by the smarts of her gentle dog Ella who was the first to find the orphan.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
