Heavy rain has been falling all over the island the past two days.Prior to this refreshing change of weather however, was Singapore’s record long dry spell. The hot and dry weather had been wrecking havoc on our flora causing much of our plants and grass to be parched. The unbearable heat also forced all our animals to seek shelter, only to come out in the late afternoon as the sun begins to set.
We put up and improved our shade nets but this only helped a bit.Even animals like our Indian star tortoises who originate from a dry climate could not take the heat. This is probably due to the fact that these victims of the illegal wildlife trade were probably kept indoors all their lives and are finding it difficult to adapt back in an outdoor environment.
This is however part of the rehabilitation process, where they will slowly learn to cope with the new surrounding and we at ACRES are doing all we can to aid them along the way. Along with the shade nets, we obtained a few sprinklers, These affordable plastic sprinklers have been doing wonders as they cool down the ambient temperature of the enclosures. The tortoises all seem to come out of their shelters and wonder about actively under the ‘rain’. We also boosted our shade by transplanting more banana plants and ferns. This short video shows Boltz, our Giant Asian pond turtle actively moving about in the morning and our male tortoises foraging under the sprinklers’ rain’ of water.
The sprinkler can be put aside for now however, as the dry phase of the North-East monsoon transitions into the South-West monsoon bringing with it heavy rain. Lets just hope the thunderstorms calm down over the next few days, as its always better to work in sweaty clothes rather then sweaty and drenched clothes.
