ICY RESCUE FOR SEAL: HE SWIMS FREE AGAIN!
Photo by Lee Eggert Jr., Tuckerton Fire Department
Fire departments donned their winter water gear to assist the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in rescuing this 3 year old seal who had been trapped on the ice for several days near Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Wearing wet suits and using proper safety protocol, the team ventured onto the ice carefully. The goal was to keep the seal from using his sharp claws to dig in and scoot out farther onto the ice. Fortunately, he was easily netted, and after a few days of rest and recovery, he has been returned to open water in his home territory.
Ice rescues are particularly dangerous and people perish during these attempts every year. Please use extreme caution and call 911 for help if you come across an animal trapped on or in the ice.
