8 March 2014 – It was a rough Saturday for the Macaque Rescue Team. It was mid-afternoon and the Bukit Batok Nature Reserve Macaques were making their way back into the forest for their afternoon nap. They took turns crossing the road but a female carrying 2 babies lost her life while trying to make her way back. Here’s a first hand account from Sabrina, a member from the team, who witnessed the roadkill accident:
” Witnessing it being knocked down by a speeding car was tragic. The 2 babies got thrown off from her grip and she died on the spot. Another car went over the 2 babies. I made a dash across the road, stopped the on-going traffic and returned 1 baby (just a few weeks old) to the troop, only to realise that another 1 more baby (a month old) is still alive. By this time, the troop of macaques were screaming and hooting in response to the situation. I picked it up and returned it back to the troop as well. I am relieved that both babies have been rescued on time but i am broken to see the lifeless body of their mother as i dispose her body off. This female had actually sacrificed her own body to block the 2 babies from being hit. The driver responsible for this roadkill saw me and immediately sped off. Signages have to be placed here. Speed limit penalties have to be reinforced. Roadkills are heartbreaking. But to know that you have hit an animal, the least you can do, as a form of respect is to pull over and put the dead animal at the side of the road. “
Wild animals not just macaques, face risky situations like this everyday. It is battle just to make it out alive each day for them. Towards a world where animals are treated with compassion, please slow down drivers and drive cautiously. Safe drivers equates to safer roads for wildlife and humans alike. We thank the drivers who were at the Jalan Jurong Kechil road for slowing down and giving us the full cooperation as we rescued the baby macaques.
