The ACRES Lao volunteer programme is raising awareness about animal welfare among local kids too.
Over in ACRES Lao PDR, our volunteer programme is gathering momentum. Last week we welcomed 40 (yes, that’s right four-zero) students from Vientiane College, who came to volunteer as part of their ‘Community Service’ course. The students are all on the American Access course run by the US Embassy in Lao and for many of them it was the first time they had been to the Sanctuary and seen such animals so close-up.
After a guided tour around the Sanctuary and explanations about such issues as bear bile farming, the students (literally) rolled up their sleeves and got to work carrying out husbandry in various enclosures. Not shy about getting their hands dirty, they were all eagerly asking questions about why it was important to volunteer and help animals, why cleaning needed to be done in the enclosures, why animals need our help, and so on. As always, it was great to see such enthusiasm from the younger generation and provides hope for the future.
The following day they came back in the morning. After a fun and educational quiz whilst they waited for breakfast, as a thank you to us and all the staff for our hard work, they again set about carrying out husbandry…this time around the Sanctuary itself, collecting any and all trash they could find on the ground.
Thank you Vientiane College for giving us the opportunity to teach these students about animal welfare and hopefully providing a brighter future for the animals.
