IT IS THE 3RD OF MARCH AND IT IS WORLD WILDLIFE DAY!
“WHEN WHAT GOES AROUND COMES BACK ONE BIG ROUND, protect our wildlife”
“Wildlife now has its own special day on the United Nations calendar. On the 3rd of March we will for the first time ever celebrate World Wildlife Day.
The 3rd of March is the opportunity for all of us – no matter who we are or where we are – to celebrate the beauty and variety of the millions of plants and animals that we share our planet with” – John E. Scanlon, General Secretery of CITES
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement to ensure that trade does not threaten wildlife species with extinction. CITES regulates international trade in CITES-listed species of live animals and plants, including their parts and derivatives, based on a system of permits which must be presented before consignments leave or enter a country.
The Convention currently has a membership of 178 countries. Parties act by restricting international trade in species listed in Appendix I and by regulating and monitoring trade in others included in Appendix II and III that might become endangered. Singapore became a Signatory to CITES in November 1986 and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority is the Management Authority responsible for the implementation and enforcement of CITES in Singapore.
WITH THE ENFORCEMENT OF CITES IN SINGAPORE, LET US WORK TOGETHER ON OUR SUNNY ISLAND TO WIPE OUT ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE ONCE AND FOR ALL..
