Brownie, A Gutsy > 13 Year-Old Community Cat
Tweet |
Brownie must be more than 13 years old this year. She is a community cat who lives in Mary Yap’s neighbourhood and Mary has been feeding her as long as she has lived there. It also took Mary a good four years to finally be able to catch Brownie for spaying (that was many years back, of course).
In September 2010, Brownie was found with one leg dangling from her body and Mary brought her to the vet. Brownie had a leg fracture and an IM-pin insertion surgery was done, subsidised by us.

The gutsy girl recovered and went back to the community.
She even has a “hand-maiden”, affectionately known as “Mooi Chai”:http://myanimalcare.org/2011/01/10/brownie-is-back-in-her-colony/,who accompanies her everywhere (literally, waits on her hand and foot!)
Brownie and Mooi Chai reunited after her surgery.
However, Mooi Chai has not been seen lately. But Brownie is still going strong. Recently, she had a bout of mange and was hospitalised for treatment. She recovered and went back to her neighbourhood again.
Nowadays, after so many years, Brownie still does not allow Mary to touch her, but would wait for Mary every day for breakfast and dinner.

“Where these animals are born is where they belong.”
We truly hope that one day, the authorities will allow neutered street animals to live in the community for that is their home. For this to happen, a few other things must happen first:
1. Individuals take the initiative to CNRM the animals on their respective streets and look after them responsibly. Rehome where we can, failing which, we return to colony.
2. Other individuals to be more accepting of the presence of these animals and allow them to live on the street. In other words, please do not complain.
3. The authorities to spare the ear-notched animals from being captured.
We have been lobbying for (3) ever since we started in 2009 and we shall continue to lobby for it. I’m quite excited as I’ve been engaged in a discussion with someone who is interested to pursue this with us. Let’s see what materialises this time. And it’s not a politician. No more politicians, please.
If (3) can happen, people would be more encouraged to take up (1). If (3) happens, (2) might follow suit gradually.
Please spare the ear-notched animals – that’s all we ask for. And community animals like Brownie will get to live on happily and peacefully in her natural home.
