This is an Ornate Horned Frog, also called the Pacman Frog. They have a ferocious appetite and can live up to 10 years or more in captivity. Population numbers for this species is on the decline, and one major factor is the international pet trade. They are not native to Singapore and it is illegal to keep or sell one as a pet. Instead of confining them in a tank, wouldn’t it be so much more rewarding to celebrate the wonders of nature by observing animals like them flourish in their natural habitats?
Just 2 weeks ago, a man was convicted and fined $41,000 for keeping 32 animals as pets in his home. Of these, 19 are classified as endangered species and 13 are classified as wild animals. As much as many of us would agree that this fine does not do the animals and the offence justice, let us take the opportunity to learn from this and reflect on how this will affect the way the younger generations after us will see animals in nature. Wild animals belong in the wild, and we should try to respect their needs too. After all, a nature that is void of life would not be quite the same as the “nature” we envision for our future.
