Say Hello To Cute Lil’ Yiribana!
A six-month-old koala baby is the new star of Germany’s Duisburg Zoo. Aptly named Yiribana (‘this way’ in Eora Aborigine language), this sweet baby would certainly have turned all the eyes ‘this way’.
Yiribana, whose parents are a French mother, born in Beauval Zoo in central France, and a father who came to Duisburg direct from Australia, does not yet have a name.
The zoo previously asked the public to vote for one of three proposed names for the baby, based on the Eora Aborigine language: Barani (‘yesterday’), Woomera (‘spear-thrower’) and Yiribana (‘this way’). Yiribana came out first.
Young koalas are called joeys and stay in their mother’s pouch for the first six or seven months. They are fully weaned at about a year. Koalas feed largely on eucalyptus leaves, which has limited nutritional and calorific content. Because of this, koalas are largely sedentary creatures, sleeping for up to 20 hours a day. Koalas are not social animals. Bonding only exists between mothers and their dependent offspring.
