From ACRES Lao PDR “In the first week of this month, we had four new animals in our care!

The four macaques were donated in the middle of the night. The monk who brought them said he had traveled from a temple in southern Lao. He explained that the temple is very close to what is know locally as a ‘monkey forest’ and is home to many macaques. He told us that people will often catch them to be kept as pets or tourist ‘attractions’ but that they will often get donated to the temple too.

Having heard that we could offer them a better quality of life, he drove for hours to pass them to us.

Whilst is it fantastic to hear that word of our Wildlife Sanctuary is spreading, this story is still testament to the fact that there remains much to do to advocate for an end to animal cruelty in Asia. And this includes educating the tourists who, often unwittingly, fuel the trade in illegally caught wildlife.

But we stay positive, focused and determined. We strive for the day that all animals can be free from the threat of capture, chains and and cages, and that ultimately, sanctuaries like ours will become redundant.

But for now though, we will look after these fellas and work towards rehabilitating and releasing them back into the wild one day!
