It was suppose to be a normal day of routine bandage change for Suzzie at the animal hospital. But things took a drastic turn. Dr Ly examined the condition of her already badly injured hand and decided that it has to be amputated. Her hand had multiple fractures, dead and rotting tissues, her skin was ripped off and 4 of her fingers were so dead that they dropped off on their own. Only her last finger could be saved.
It was 4 hours of intensive operation. But to our relief, Dr Ly was determined to save what he can from her hand and forgo amputation. He and his team removed the bits and pieces of fractured bones as well as dead tissues. He reconstructed her existing bones with pins, needles and tools i have never seen before. He used a bone cure membrane which is a biocompatible membrane, possessing regenerative qualities.
Wrapping up the end of the operation is called Autography/ Autologous graft / Autotransplant. It is a process whereby a tissue or organ is grafted into a new position in or on the body of the same individual. It allows the regeneration of new skin while being protected / enveloped by the existing overlapped skin. I know it appears absurb but, this is just temporary. Once healed, her hand will be stitch off from her body. Unfortunately, Suzzie will need to endure this phase before her hand can be separated from her body.
Here’s what Sabrina, a member of the Macaque Rescue Team has to say after the operation : ” It seems like all odds are against us now but if you tell me that its impossible for Suzzie to go back to the wild, i disagree. Macaques have been seen and known to survive with a missing limb due to illegal snares. And Suzzie still has her limb, it just requires time for her to adapt. We will ensure that she gets ample space and time to exercise while still remaining wild. I am determined never to look back. I have set my goals straight for her and I will ensure that she gets better each day. I will not stop and I await for the day where I will be able to open the door to her crate for her to begin her second chance at life. The image of the alpha male from Suzzie’s troop remains etched in my head from the day of rescue and it still feels like we both held an agreement about Suzzie”.
Suzzie will get better, this we believe and will fight on with her all the way. She is fiesty, a fighter and has left me memorable bite marks on my fingers. She will get through this. We from ACRES thank Dr Ly and his team for the amazing support and help. The operation done on Suzzie was pro-bono. Thank you will never be enough for all the help he and his team have given to all the macaques we have brought in. Thank you to everyone who has shown support, care and concern towards this little girl. She is fortunate to have been rescued on time. There are many out there, facing painful situations all thanks to the existence of illegal snares. Please continue to follow us on Suzzie’s updates. Your support means alot to us and her.
