Soi Dog this week sponsored a conference of over 200 officers of the Royal Thai Police from all police stations in NE Thailand. The meeting was arranged by our partners, Watch Dog Thailand (WDT) to discuss the stepping up of action against dog traffickers in the region. Many police officers were not familiar with the laws or procedures to follow after making arrests. Clear guidelines are being given and a helpline is to be set up and will be manned by Soi Dog/WDT to receive calls from the general public who sight vehicles carrying dogs. Soi Dog will be sponsoring a large poster campaign throughout the region offering rewards for information leading to arrests.
A further meeting is being organised in Bangkok with the chiefs of police of the 4 regions that cover the entire north of Thailand as traffickers look for alternative routes and markets for Thai dogs. Following the large scale interceptions earlier this year the traders are still active but the number of live dogs being exported has been cut drastically. Sadly dogs continue to be killed locally for meat and skins in large numbers, as it is far easier to transport and hide carcasses. Dog meat continues to be sold openly in and around Tha Rae where there is strong local political support for the trade.
A recent Asian TV report on the dog skin business estimates 100,000 dogs per year being killed for skins alone. Skins are used locally for production of leather goods and drum skins. There is also a big demand from China, Japan and Korea from sporting goods manufacturers. Because of its thinness and stickiness, dog skin apparently is highly desired by golf glove manufacturers.
