THE IMPORTANCE OF STERILISING STREET DOGS
Tweet | ![]() |
Andrew came to the shelter with horrendous head wounds sustained during a fight with another male dog over a female dog in heat. Female dogs in heat urine mark their area as a way of attracting male dogs for mating and this can be smelt by male dogs as far away as one and a half kilometers. Unfortunately for Andrew, he was not the only male dog in the area to detect this scent and he came off poorly in the competition for her affections. It has been said that male dogs around a female in heat suffer from stress, restlessness and a general loss of their sanity.
If Andrew had not been found, his wounds would have most likely become infected, leading to septicemia and possibly death! Besides preventing the birth of unwanted and stray puppies, sterilising street dogs also protects their well-being as sterilised dogs are barely interested in mating, reducing the aggression and spread of disease amongst these dogs. We can assure you, Andrew will be sterilised as soon as he has recovered from his wounds!
