RESCUED FROM ICY RACETRACK: SPECIAL NEEDS CAT SEEKS HOME

Carlito finally came in from the cold. Now, he needs a miracle.
Three years ago, a handsome, mustachioed tuxedo cat found himself abandoned at a Massachusetts racetrack. The person who had brought him there to serve as a barn cat left him behind at the end of the racing meet, and this big-hearted, people-loving sweetheart was forced to hunt mice and birds to survive.
A caring contingent of track security guards took pity on the cat they dubbed “Carlito” and provided him with scraps whenever they could. Still, with the track about to close for the winter this past December…meaning the vast barn area would be all but deserted…these compassionate guards decided it was time for Carlito to finally find a home, and a family, to call his own. Working with local cat rescuers, they helped get Carlito into a carrier and en route to what was supposed to be placement in a no-kill shelter.
But Carlito…who has already survived three years of challenging conditions, roaming coyotes, and the New England elements…was dealt another cruel hand: he tested positive for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) during his vet exam. A follow-up test is being conducted to confirm the diagnosis, but if he is indeed truly positive, he cannot go to the shelter he was destined for, as he must be kept separate from uninfected cats.
Carlito is an absolute lovebug of a cat. He is quiet and gentle, truly people-oriented, and wants nothing more than to stretch out and have his chin and belly rubbed by someone who is kind to him. He is only about 4 years old, neutered, and shows no signs of illness. It is possible that, with good care, he could live several more years. After all he has been through, he deserves that and more.
Carlito needs help urgently. He needs a foster or adoptive home that either has no other cats; has only other FeLV+ cats; or can keep him permanently separated from other cats (FeLV is only contagious to cats – it is not harmful to people, dogs, or any other species). Please, can’t you give him the chance he deserves at a happy life?
If you can help Carlito, please email seventeen_hands@yahoo.com or call 617-835-9376. He is currently located in the Boston area but needs placement ASAP.
