Blanket No. 14 (Diagonals In Blue) � Up For Auction!

I’ve been looking at ideas from the internet and discovered some very refreshing and innovative ideas for patchwork.

So, here’s introducing Blanket No. 14, Diagonals in Blue!

The bids as they come in:

9th Dec:

At 2.36am, Khalifa bids RM350.

8th Dec:�

Maneki Neko bids RM300.

�It’s 4ft by 6ft, all cotton material.

This is a two-layered patchwork blanket without padding in between.

And this new design is done with strips of cloth:

�Long strips are sewn together, by machine. My mum did that.
(My mum’s sewing machine is a Singer classic and it’s more than 80 years old as it was passed down from my grandmother!)

Then the sewn strips are cut into squares, put together and sewn again.

And cut again, so that we get diagonals.

Then, we arrange whatever design we want, and sew them together.

To do this kind of diagonal designs without wasting any cloth, I needed to use the sewing machine.

So, probably for the second time in my entire life, here I am, using a sewing machine! You cannot hand-stitch for this design if you use the idea from the internet where there is no wastage of any cloth. All diagonals are done with strips. It’s ingenious and truly mathematical! And you can generate all kinds of permutations with it. This is really good exercise for the brain!

It’s pretty cool, isn’t it?

You see diagonals, but they are all made with strips and not a single bit of cloth is wasted at all. Truly eco-friendly, I must say. Since I did not hand-stitch this piece, I did not need to draw any lines at all. Sewing is done using the half-foot of the sewing machine as a measure.
