BELOW IS A MESSAGE FROM HERO. THE STORY OF COURSE IS FICTIONAL BUT LIKELY VERY CLOSE TO WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM.
Hi Everbody,
The staff have asked me to send a message and this is what I would tell you if I could talk.
I am so grateful for all the good wishes and support you have been sending me. I am feeling love for the first time in my life since I left my mother. I have been living on the streets for nearly two years and used to do OK, but then my fur started to fall out and I itched so much that my skin started to bleed. People stopped coming near me and instead threw things at me and chased me away from the village I was sleeping in. I heard them say I was diseased. I walked for miles dodging cars but every time I went to look for food people would chase me away.
In one village two men called me over and I thought they were going to give me food but instead grabbed me and started to hit me with things. It hurt and when I managed to escape I was in a lot of pain and blood was everywhere. I continued to walk and came to another very modern village with big houses. I was feeling very weak and knew I had to find somewhere where nobody would find me and I could close my eyes and sleep forever.
I found a quiet corner in a building where I was sure nobody would find me but a lady came into the room and at first I feared the worst, I was trapped and did not have the strength to run away. Instead she gave me some food and a bowl of water and put powder on my wounds. She promised she would come back but told me I must be quiet as people who ran this village would surely kill me if they knew I was there as they had killed other dogs that dared to come in this village before. Next morning she came back but this time with a man and I was very frightened, but he was gentle and picked me up and put me in a truck.
I did not know where I was going but came to this place where there are many other dogs like me. Here they feed me and each day they gently clean my wounds. They also sometimes stick things in me but it doesn’t hurt and I no longer feel like I need to sleep forever.
I do not know what will happen to me in the future, but hope I can stay here as the people are so nice to me. Maybe one day I can live like some other dogs I have seen who actually live in houses and look after the people they live with.
