DEER ON THE ROOFTOP: A REAL-LIFE RUDOLPH RESCUE

Children are whispering of an early Christmas in the small French village of Verneuil-sur-Indre, where residents awoke to find an unusual looking deer standing on a rooftop. With a lovely set of antlers bearing a striking resemblance to those of reindeer depicted pulling Santas sleigh, locals are wondering where the animal came from.

As light rain fell, there was real danger that the deer would be seriously injured in a fall as the slippery rooftop and crowd of people trying to rescue the animal created the perfect storm of tension and fear.

Rescuers began laying down an artificial track made of a rubber-like ladder and tarp, designed to give the deer some traction to ascend the rooftop and jump onto a nearby garden. Some three hours passed during the rescue attempts and its absolutely amazing that the deer was not too exhausted to make an exit. Just as the crowd was beginning to believe this would end badly, the deer made it to the peak of the roof and, in one glorious moment of flight, he was gone.

According to town officials, the deer is actually a member of a species from East Asia and would not normally be found in this part of the globe. However, some species of Asian deer including Sika were introduced into parks in France as ornamental attractions in recent decades and many have become wild and are breeding.

No one knows where the now-free rooftop deer will appear next, but some of the smallest residents of Verneuil-sur-Indre are holding firm to their own theory and are on their very best behavior in anticipation that the next clamor on the rooftop may just include a man dressed in red.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
