KITTEN ESCAPES GARBAGE BAG AND IS SAVED BY NEIGHBORS!

Written by Debra Hardcastle (OK, U.S.A.)

A year ago, my neighbor’s granddaughter ran up to where my neighbor and I were visiting, “Gramma, Gramma, look what I found!” In her hands was a tiny kitten, which I estimated to be about 4 weeks old.

The kitten was in poor condition. Her eye was swollen and puss-crusted, we couldn’t tell if the eye was damaged, or missing. In addition, the kitten was covered with fleas, her ears were blood-crusted from ear mites, and there wasn’t a ounce of fat on her. Literally, she was just skin and bones.

Since there was a new neighbor, we brought the cat to their house to see if it was theirs, and were told that they’d “never seen the kitten before”. Immediately, we gave her food and water, which she devoured. We called our vet. After explaining the condition of the kitten, and that she was eating and drinking, our vet told us to bring the kitten in the following day.

Instead of being 4 weeks old, as we thought, our vet informed us that she was 8 or 9 weeks old, and severely malnourished. Her eye was there (thankfully) but infected, as well as having an ulcerated cornea. We started her on antibiotics, plus medicine for her eye, as well as treatments for her fleas, ear mites and probable worms. It took 8 weeks to clear up her eye, involving several different types of medications. What started as a viral infection, had been compounded by a bacterial infection.

During the 8 week period of weekly vet appointments, we learned that the kitten had in fact been owned by the neighbors who’d claimed to have never seen the kitten before. It was his daughter’s kitten, which he’d told her had died. He had tried to dispose of the still-living kitten by putting it into a plastic bag and putting it in his dumpster to be picked up by the trash haulers the following day! Thankfully, it somehow escaped!

We named the kitten Zoe, which means life. Seemed fitting, and she’s doing wonderfully now. PHOTO OF ZOE ON DAY OF RESCUE: You won’t believe the change in Zoe, Click here to see Zoe on the day of rescue http://animalrescuechase.com/rescue_showcase/story.php?id=1176

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
