SUPER CYCLONE: Animal Relief Mission Begins!
Phailin is now a super cyclone and could be the strongest tropical storm worldwide this year. The wind speed is expected to be between 250 and 260 km per hour as it punishes the Odisha coasts in India today.
The emergency response team at APOWA have turned to the Harmony Fund for help. Two years ago we supported their exemplary relief efforts for animals following a smaller storm, and now they are going to need 10 times the supplies in responding to the animals who will be injured, trapped in flood waters and without food in the weeks to come.
The last communication we had from APOWA director Bijaya Kumar Kabi last night said, “Torrential rains pounding now. Wind speed rising. This may last communication from us.”
We’re organizing the fundraising for APOWA as they may be without power and communication for days or weeks and will be completely immersed in field rescue work.
