PEPPER THE ‘CHICKEN-KILLER’ GETS A GREAT NEW LIFE!

Doreen Tumminia was at work one day when she found herself consoling a coworker who had just said goodbye to her elderly dog. And with a reputation for being active in helping locate lost pets, Doreen seemed like a natural ally.
“She knew that I looked for peoples lost pets in my spare time, so she asked me if I could find her another dog,” Doreen said. “Her other dog was sad at the passing of his companion, so she wanted another companion for him.”
Doreen tucked the “assignment” away in the back of her mind and returned to her regular work in searching for lost pets. She wasn’t at it for long before someone caught her attention.
“I came across this dog in the pound at the Lancaster animal shelter,” Doreen said. “I immediately called my daughter Candyce and asked if we could go look at him.”
Because the shelter was an hour’s drive, Doreen thought she ought to call the shelter to make sure they were open and the dog was still there.
“Yes, he is still here,” said the voice on the other end of the line. “But I better warn you that he was surrendered because he is a chicken killer.”
Doreen was skeptical and said, “I will be right there.”
When the ladies arrived at the shelter, Doreen approached a staff member and asked for the so-called chicken killer.
“Such sad, sad eyes he had,” Doreen said. “He looked like a big mess, but was so cute. I do not know why, but after I saw him, I just started to go back to my car where my daughter was waiting. I was about to get in and go home, and she said, ‘Ma, I know you, we will get halfway down the road and you will make me turn around.’. She was right, that is exactly what I would have done.”
So Doreen got back out of the car, went inside the building and the man behind the desk asked, ”So, did you pick a dog out”?
”Yes, I will take the chicken killer,” Doreen said.
”They brought him out to me on a leash and let me tell you, that dog jumped right in my car in the back seat and looked at us as if to say, ‘Step on the gas, lets get out of here!” Doreen recalls with a smile.
After a good bath at home to remove a foul odor, Doreen took her new friend to the veterinarian and was smacked with the news that he had heartworm. The disease, fortunately, was not very advanced and treatment is now underway.
“We got him groomed and let me tell you, this dog is the most lovable dog!” Doreen says proudly. “He sleeps right above my head on a pillow at night. I just love him!”
”I have a feeling that his dog was surrendered because they found out that he had heartworm and could not afford the treatment. But their loss is my gain,” Doreen explains. “My co-worker had gotten another dog, so I kept Pepper. I am so happy that this doggie found me!”
