3 YOUNG BOYS HELP CAPTURE SHY STRAY DOG

A beautiful story….

Written by Ed Kostro

This tiny stray was sleeping in the bushes outside a nearby church, and numerous people had already attempted to rescue him with no success. I was told that he had been wandering the neighborhood for about a month, and that he would always return to these church bushes every night to sleep.

I arrived at this church early the next morning, and I soon spotted this tiny homeless waif fast asleep in the bushes. I tip-toed to his location with some enticing food in hand, but as soon as he spotted me approaching, he jumped up and took off down the street. It appeared that everyone was right – this extremely skittish little guy would have to be trapped.

I immediately set up and baited two of my traps, one on each side of the church, and now it was just a matter of waiting for this starving little dog to return to his safe haven in the bushes. But it wasn’t long before I received a phone call that he was now sprawled out on someone’s front lawn several blocks away.

I grabbed one of my traps and raced to the location. When I got there, I saw three young boys compassionately putting out some water for this extremely thirsty little street waif. And he was already eagerly lapping the water up, very grateful for their refreshing offering in the intense summer heat.

I quickly approached these three boys and I asked them if they thought that they could lure this little dog into one of their backyards with some food. They all very readily agreed to try, and I gave them tiny bits of bologna and chicken to use as bait.

These three boys soon began dropping these tasty morsels of food on the ground, and slowly backing their way into one of their yards. Thankfully, this extremely hungry little dog was now following after them and very readily gulping up their food offerings. Soon, he was inside the yard, and we were able to close the yard gate behind him. This tiny wanderer now had nowhere left to run.

But now, he was utterly terrified in his new confinement, and he wanted no part of my leash. I was finally able to corner him against a fence and place my loop leash around his tiny neck, while he attempted to bite me in sheer terror. After quite a while he finally calmed down, and we were able to maneuver him into my trap.

I thanked these three young heroes for their tremendous help in rescuing him, and ‘Little Renny from St. Rene’s’ was soon on his way to the animal hospital.

Very sadly, like so many street orphans that we find out there today, Little Renny had no tags, no I.D., and no microchip. And he had not been neutered. He was also malnourished and skin and bones thin. I now started to suspect that this poor little guy had been very cruelly abandoned by someone at the church.

After spending several days at the animal hospital, Little Renny is now at my home receiving the tender loving care that every dog deserves. For the first week or so, he was extremely shy and hesitant, and extremely nervous when my spouse or I would pick him up, not yet knowing what to expect from us.

But it didn’t take too long before he started to trust us, and also to enjoy the company of our other once homeless street orphans, who have all readily accepted him in their midst. Little Renny has now discovered the joy of romping and playing with our other dogs, and of snoozing the afternoon away on our sofa – it’s far more comfortable than those deep, dark, extremely lonely church bushes.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
