This week’s at ACRES Laos Wildlife Sanctuary, the rescue of 28 Elephant Trunk Snakes!
28 Elephant Trunk Snakes were being illegally smuggled from Thailand to Laos, likely destined to become someone’s dinner or to be kept as illegal pets. Thankfully, the Laos government officials confiscated them at the Lao-Thailand border and contacted ACRES Lao PDR. Unfortunately, we are unable to release them back into the wild here as they are non-native to Laos. Being aquatic snakes, most were suffering from dehydration upon arrival while others were wounded during transportation. These adorable looking aquatic snakes are non-venomous and nocturnal. They spend most of their life under water and rarely go onto land. They can stay underwater for up to 40 minutes and feed on fish and amphibians after using their powerful bodies to constrict them.
