MEN CANOE IN DARKNESS TO SAVE TRAPPED DEER!

My husband and I came across this large buck as we were walking our dogs through a parkway near our house. It was the middle of the day and the deer was half submerged in the pond. We got a closer look and realized he had something wrapped around his antlers and it was trailing about 100 feet behind him. It was a white, nylon strap.

We ran home to call the Department of Natural Resources and wildlife agencies, but no one could help him. My husband suited up in his waders and we went back to try to cut the strap off the antlers, but of course the deer ran away with this trailing behind him. He ran across the road and back frantically kicking and jumping�trying to escape the thing chasing behind him. He ended up back in the pond, but we could not reach him.

By this time, a Department of Natural Resources agent stopped by and told us that they do not interfere with wild animals unless there is a danger to the public. They thought that the deer would likely die of exhaustion or hypothermia if it stayed submerged in the pond.

We were trying to figure out a way to help him and thought if we could get a boat in the pond, maybe we could cut him loose. By this time, it was late and we�d have to wait until the next day.

At night, we drove over to see him and he was out of the pond under some trees with the strap trailing behind on top of the pond. After some calls to sympathetic friends, we borrowed a canoe and my husband and good friend rowed up to where the strap lay on the water and grabbed hold. The buck jumped out of the water and pulled them, but they were able to shorten the strap to about 2-3 feet hanging off the side of his rack. The buck ran away and we never saw him again. He was finally free!
