Born in Avsallar, Turkey, these two cats are waking up to a sunny morning in New England. Emily (calico) and her son Cookie were born in a community where their odds of being stoned to death or poisoned were at least 50%. But things are getting better.
The volunteer rescue program in Avsallar is thriving thanks to project leader Manuela Wroblewski and veterinarian Dr. Osman. Hundreds of cats and dogs are fed, sterilized and treated for injuries. Some of the lucky ones, like these sweethearts, find homes far, far away.
