And A Little Kitty Life Is Saved (a Sharing By A Reader)

We received an S.O.S. to help a little kitten last week. A long story cut short, the kitten is saved and now, off to a loving home, all thanks to the perseverance of the rescuer.

We have sought the rescuer’s consent to share her story:

Dear Dr Chan,

We found a month-old kitten hobbling along a busy street in Ampang and
we were worried it might get run over, so we picked it up before it
strayed on to the middle of the road. We noticed that the left front
paw is longer than normal. We would have adopted her but we have 3
cats already and one of them is quite a handful coz he has CH and
urinates everywhere, apart from that we live in a small apartment. So
we took her to spca, the woman there told me that if I don’t come back
for her by 11 am tomorrow, they will euthanize her. I asked my
friends, but they are like me, we have more cats than we can handle
and we live in apartments. Is there a fosterer that could take her
asap before we find someone who could adopt her?

Hamida

We advised Hamida to take back the kitty and at the same time, advertise for a fosterer at PetFinder.my and other pet forums. We offered our medical subsidy should the kitten need any medical treatment. Hamida took back the kitten the very next day.

Hello Dr Chan,

We took back the kitten and she is currently with us. I’m asking my acquaintances if they would take her. SPCA gave her some de-worming medicine and applied some anti-flea spray, coz she was heavily infested. Dr said that the leg needs to be amputated to make it easier for her to move about, but it cannot be done till she’s about 5 months. So I guess there’s no need for me to apply for subsidy.
She has an open wound on the her paw, the spot that she walks on. We put a dressing on it and some cream that Dr gave us. Due to that open wound, we cant have her use the clay litter sand. Could you advice me on what we can use for her?
We suggested paper litter or pine pellet but advised Hamida to seek a vet’s advice on this.

To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>Hello Dr Chan,I’m happy to bring you the news that the kitten we found on the road
had been adopted. A malay lady by the name of Nadia met me in Ampang
to pick up the kitten. She saw the pet profile I placed on petfinder.
Thank you sooo much for all the advice. God bless you!

Hamida

And bless you, Hamida, for saving the kitten’s life and finding her a home.

As far as we know, many shelters cannot accept infant animals as these animals are too young to withstand the shelter environment and probably will not survive in there. So, if you rescue an infant animal, it is best not to surrender the animal to a shelter. If you need a fosterer, go to the pet forums or PetFinder.my. These are far more effective than we are at sourcing such help. Or, you might want to nurse the animal yourself:http://myanimalcare.org/fosterrehome/.
