Hamsters make great pets for children because they are less demanding and are fairly simple to maintain. They may be small and easy to keep, but hamsters have their special needs too! Because it’s so difficult to tell the gender of a small or baby hamster, many make the mistake of placing two hamsters of opposite genders in the same cage. As hamsters are prolific breeders, the situation will soon get out of hand. Having litters of hamsters to deal with after will prove challenging. Their tendency to fight to the death over territory also means it’s best to keep hamsters separate. Want two hamsters? Get two cages :)

Learn more about the hamster, and if you’re ready to adopt one, come visit the lovely hamsters in our shelter!
