Every Life Counts

A few people have expressed their utter disappointment with the result of our meeting with MPSJ today.
I know how disappointed you are, but were you really placing so much hope on getting it through? I’ve learnt to keep my hopes high but expectations at zero. That way, a disappointment will not hit you so hard and you will have the strength to (1) carry on your good work (or what you believe to be right) and (2) maybe even see a silver lining behind every cloud.
Some have expressed that everything that they have done or are doing for the strays has been a “waste of time”. Now, why would you say that?
Is saving that one kitten’s life a waste of time?
Is rehoming that puppy a waste of time?
You may not have saved the whole world (and who can?) but you have made a huge difference to that one kitten’s world or that one puppy’s world.
Don’t give up so easily, please.
See all the good you have done so far, even if you have only got one animal neutered. Think of all the unwanted births you had prevented. Think of all the unwanted suffering you have stopped.
Yes, for every puppy that you save, how many others have died? Yes, you are right, but does that mean you are going to give up on saving the next puppy?
I don’t know why but I keep getting this question every time I talk about saving stray animals. “But there are so many, how many can you save? What difference would it make??” Well, it makes a big difference to that ONE life that I have saved, I answer. And while some people will shake their head and keep complaining that there is no point saving stray animals (because the work is endless), I’d rather go save another life.
I don’t see charity workers giving up fighting poverty, helping orphans or old folks, do you? Poverty doesn’t end. And there will always be orphans and old folks. It doesn’t end, does it? Yet, charity workers do not give up. I don’t see people giving up fighting crime or drugs, do you? Crime doesn’t end too. I don’t see doctors giving up when their patients die of a disease. New viruses appear so often, there is no end to fighting diseases, so do you give up your cause in saving lives?
If we give up so easily just because of one setback or one hurdle that we cannot cross, hmm….what are we made of? Is our passion for helping animals so easily burnt out?
So, let us stop cursing, stop complaining and start doing something positive, no matter how small it is.
If you have a better idea at approaching the councils, please, by all means, please try.
I have been trying for 3 years, it’s always been a “No”. So I tried again today, and it’s still a “No”. I’m not about to mope and waste my time harbouring on all the negatives. After our meeting at MPSJ, we went to Selayang to buy dogfood for a feeder in Klang whom we hope to meet tomorrow. We delivered soap to a reader. Then I came home, wrote about today’s meeting, replied emails and paid out subsidies. No time to waste dwelling on the negatives, folks. Let’s move on…there is work to be done!
Let’s not miss the trees because we are too busy trying to set the forest right. Every tree counts.
Every life counts.
I found a sparrow lying on the ground.
Her life I knew would soon be at an end.
I knelt before her as she made a sound
And listened as she said, “My friend,”
“Take these wings and learn to fly
To the highest mountain in the sky.
Take these eyes and learn to see
All the things so dear to me.
Take this song and learn to sing.
Fill your voice with all the joys of spring.
Take this heart and set it free!
Let it fly……….. beyond the sea!”
I found a another sparrow on the sand.
A tiny bird whose life had just begun.
I picked him up and held him in my hand.
I smiled at him and said, “My son,”
“Take these wings and learn to fly
To the highest mountain in the sky.
Take these eyes and learn to see
All the things so dear to me.
Take this song and learn to sing.
Fill your voice with all the joys of spring.
Take this heart and set it free!
Let it fly……….. beyond the sea!”

Sometimes, it helps to recall the innocence of our childhood where we never gave up easily on anything.
Take your heart and set it free!
Let it fly….beyond the sea!
