07-Jun-2013 An update on emergency relief work at the Nakhon Phanom shelter.
Many thanks to the many organizations who have cooperated in getting veterinarian teams to the Nakhon Phanom shelter to help stem the disease epidemic there.
Tremendous thanks to lead shelter veterinarian Dr. Bo and her team and Mr. Chusak Pongpanich as well as the international veterinarian teams for their hard work and dedication.
The local and international vets have been doing a great job. Nearly all dogs have now been vaccinated and the death toll has decreased from between 20 to 30 dogs a day to around 5 per day. Work has now begun on sterilizing the healthy dogs.
Certainly not out of the woods yet however… Distemper is a highly contagious air borne disease and controlling it in an overcrowded environment such as this is an enormous task.
The first of 10 planned purpose built shelters for more permanent sheltering of dogs is nearly completed (at Burriram to the south) and will take 500 well dogs. Many thanks to Soi Dog’s supporters for funding the construction of the shelter. Each shelter costs in the vicinity of $35,000. Work has also started on a 2nd shelter which Soi Dog has agreed to fund. The second shelter will also be able to accommodate 500 dogs.
Thanks to the management, vets and staff of the Nakhon Phanom shelter, WVS, WV, HIS, Foundation Briggite Bardot, NetAP and many individuals helping fund the relief effort!
