Nakhon Phanom Disease Epidemic Update 04-June-2013

Work continues vaccinating and treating rescued dogs held at the Nakhon Phanom shelter.

The mortality rate seems to be on the decline with only 8 deaths occurring on Monday compared with on average between 20 to 30 a day in the past. Hopefully this trend will continue. 114 additional dogs have been vaccinated over the past few days and vaccination work continues.

Importantly improved disease containment measures have been taken including quarantine (as best as can be done at the facilities) and regular disinfection of the runs.

Hospitalized dogs are being put on canned food throughout their treatment to quicken recovery.

Work continues on the building of purpose designed shelters for more permanent housing at the Burriram shelter to the south. The first of 10 planned shelters each at a cost of $35,000 to $40,000 is nearly completed and Soi Dog has authorized funding for a second shelter work on which has begun. Each shelter will be able to house 500 dogs.

Many thanks to the officers and staff of the Nakhon Phanom shelter, the Department of Livestock Development, World Vets, Humane Society International, Worldwide Veterinary Services, Fondation Brigitte Bardot and NetAP for their tremendous efforts towards helping the dogs.
