TARZAN THE TAR-COATED KITTY GETS RESCUED
Anyone who has ever tried to clean oil off an animal knows that it’s a very long and tedious process that involves a lot of water, a lot of Dawn dish detergent and a whole lot of patience. But when it comes to taking tar off of an animal’s fur, well, it’s sort of like washing your hair in a sink full of chewing gum.
Last week a young orange tabby got himself into a very sticky situation when he wandered into a construction site in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. The cat made his way into an area of thick tar and was coated in the black substance all the way up to his chest. Tar can be produced from petroleum, coal, wood or peat. And though the toxicity of the product this feline encountered is unknown, thankfully he didn’t get a chance to try licking it off because a Good Samaritan noticed the cat and was able to calmly capture him.
The cat was brought to the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain where veterinarians named him “Tarzan,” and gave him their best barber shop shave.
“Tarzan endured the procedure without complaint and is now resting comfortably in a nearby foster home before he can be placed for adoption,” MSPCA spokesperson Alyssa Muro said in a written statement adding that Tarzan, who has not been claimed as missing, was not wearing an identification collar nor did he have a microchip. “He’s got a wonderful temperament and even when covered in tar he purred through multiple evaluations by our shelter veterinary staff. He likely was someone’s pet before he went missing. We’re glad the person who found him thought to bring him to us so we could remove the tar as the first step to getting him into a loving home.”
