Updates On Ongsan; Its Cryptococosis (from Our Reader)

We wish to thank our reader (who has requested anonymity) for looking after Ongsan during his recuperation period.

Here’s some good news!

Dear Dr Chan,

It has been quite a few days since my update on Ongsan.

He is progressing well (not as fast as the vet would wanted it) but he is steadily progressing and the tint of the jaundice is very slowly going away and the swelling in his nose has gone down and his nostrils are more apparent now. The good news is his jaundice did not return which was worrying his vet.

He is settling quite well in his homestay sleeping (which he badly needed) and resting as he should to overcome his jaundice and lethargy state. He loves the morning sun that comes into the room and enjoys just lazing around with his three guardians Aslan, Riley and our big sized Gim Gim (tukang jaga pintu and bodyguard). The vet observed that Ongsan’s demeanour is better, happy and positive compared when he was first admitted.

Personally I noticed Ongsan turned around after hubby and I had a little chat with him telling him that no matter what happens he will always have a home and not go back to the street and all he has to do is get well, sleep and eat well – he polishes 4 bowls of AD plus Natural balance of chicken and liver after that! He was also happy to meet Cherry Berry’s Mama all the way from Sarawak at the vet yesterday.

After observing Ongsan for quite awhile now the vet is certain that Ongsan was not infected by sporo but by a yeast like fungus called Cryptococosis. Cryptococosis is caused by the yeast like fungus acquired by inhaling spores commonly in areas contaminated by birds’ droppings especially pigeon. Immunocompromised cats e.g Felv or FIV are especially vulnerable. Once inhaled the organism colonises upper respiratory tract especially in nasal passages as in Ongsan’s case.

Sporo and cryptococossis’s (many vets are not aware of) organism is similar; one is oval and one is round. But sporo is infectious but cryptococossis is not although Sporonox is used to treat both.

Ongsan has a hard modular skin swelling on the bridge of his nose, lethargy and loss of appetite (but now he eats well). Treatment for cryptococosis is similar to sporotrichosis i.e. with the same drug intraconazole (Sporonox) and should be given with a fatty meal. The duration of treatment will take between 30 days to 90 days for the fungus to be eliminated.

Looks like Ongsan has still a long to go but as the vet said that Ongsan is an easy going fella and he will do well and hubby also commented he is such a good boy, no fuss, no issues and it is so clear that all he want is to do is to survive and be alive.

Here are some snaps of Ongsan at the vet and with his food bowl.

Regards.
