Adoption Success Feature Story!

Adopter : Cheryl Hoon

Animal Adopted/Breed : Whisper/Maltese

“We welcomed Brandy into our home, who formerly was known as Whisper in the SPCA, on 9th of February 2013, the eve of the Lunar New Year. We had our heart set to adopt 5 year old Amigo, but were advised that he was unsuitable for my home as we lived with elderly grandparents.

Feeling a little disheartened, I was then introduced to 4 year old Whisper, a female Maltese who was only half the size of a normal dog of that breed, and weighed 2.3kg. Our hearts fell in love with her immediately and we made a decision to adopt her.

As soon as we got home, we started to see signs of why she was possibly abandoned. She had a dry eye condition, of which eye drops needed to be administered daily. She also had several fear/aggression issues, the most severe being food aggression and growling when we touched her paws. We were about to give up as we did not know if we would give her a good life since it seemed difficult to bond with her since her due to her temperament. She did not have any obedience training, so trying to make her sit made her jump and snappy. Brandy wasn’t toilet-trained either.

We refused to give up hope and perhaps Brandy knew we were trying hard because she soon caved in to our love and patience. That is the beauty of dogs, they live in the moment and gradually begin to accept and welcome you into their world.

Brandy is still struggling with aggression issues, but we know she will overcome it one day. Brandy has also learnt how to sit and lay down with clicker training. She is also fully toilet-trained in just 2 months! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? With consistency and patience, a dog at any age can still learn basic obedience.

I am proud of my feisty Brandy. She taught me patience, love and resilience. The rewards are proving to be endless. She probably thinks I saved her life, but in reality, it was she that saved me.”
