In Serbia, Goran Samardi? always wanted a pet when he was a boy, but a broken family life simply prevented this form of comfort. As war and sanctions and suffering invaded his country, Goran’s dream was slowly smothered. It wasn’t until Goran grew up and got married that his love of animals was rekindled through the actions of his own little girl.
“She took food and milk from the house and went to feed the dogs,” Goran said proudly of his daughter’s compassion for street animals. “It was then that I started to pay attention to the street dogs that were everywhere.”
Before long, Goran began undertaking rescues of his own and tending to sick and injured homeless animals, finding homes for many and spaying/neutering more than 500. Today Goran shelters many dogs and as you can see in the photo here, people will drop off their unwanted dogs in front of his shelter. You can see what great lengths someone went to in sealing the box shut. I suppose we should be thankful that the pups were left at the shelter and not abandoned in the woods. We’re just so relieved they were discovered before too many hours passed.
The Harmony Fund is incredibly proud of all of our supporters as you enable us to help animal shelters worldwide. The pups here at Goran’s shelter and all 400 dogs at a larger shelter in Nis are now depending on us.
Today we celebrate Goran for his devotion to the dogs and we celebrate our supporters for helping animals near and far. www.HarmonyFund.org
