Why cant I let my dog run loose? Hes well trained.
Some dog owners think its cruel to leash their dogs because it denies them freedom. Others insist that their dogs know how to walk without the leash. But heres why you shouldnt let your dog run loose when outside the house (fenced-up dog runs are a different story)
1. People have the right to walk in public without being confronted by a loose dog. Free-roaming dogs scare children and adults who are unable to tell if the dog is friendly or aggressive. Not everyone has experience with dogs and we should not assume theyll be comfortable with one approaching them, no matter how friendly we think our dogs may be. Instead of expecting others to get some experience, be a good neighbour and save yourself (and your dog) the trouble of having to handle a complaint.
2. When outdoors, expect the unexpected. Even your most familiar surroundings see changes every day. Theres no telling if something may happen to spook your free-roaming dog out. He may see an animal on the other side of the road, or simply wander further away that day because of a new scent. There are so many ever-changing elements outdoors that we cannot predict.
3. Your free-roaming dog may wander too far one day and never make it back. Someone may think your free-roaming dog is a stray and report him to the authorities, or keep him for themselves. Worse still, your dog could become victim to a malicious deed. No matter how intelligent or well-trained we think our dogs are, we should not expect them to know how to deal with external conditions that are beyond their control.
The bottom line is: just because our dogs are friendly doesnt mean everyone else is. So many accidents can happen if we allow our dogs to roam freely outdoors without barriers to ensure their safety. The best way to avoid such unpleasant accidents is to keep our dogs on a leash when they are outdoors. Never let them roam free on their own, no matter how smart you think they are.
Love your dog well, but love them responsibly too
And heres a comic to remind us why we should love our awesome dogs properly.
