Look Inwards And Carry On

There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.
- Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison, fighting for and never giving up on a cause he believed in – freedom, justice and a better life for his people as they rightly deserve.
5th May 2013 is the darkest day in our political history.
There has been an outpouring of grief, disappointment, outrage and sadness in the hearts of peace-loving and right-thinking Malaysians since midnight. We came together and fought so hard for change yet the change that we envisioned could not be realised because of an electoral process replete with blatant fraud and cheating.
There was no level playing field. No fairplay.
How do you beat a system which has total disregard for a level playing field and fairplay?
In the midst of all the disappointment, we have no where to turn to except to look inwards.
How does this disappointment affect who we are? Will we be any different because our hopes for change have been dashed?
Will we stop working hard? Will we stop doing what is good and right?
The answer is a definite “NO”.
When we are already at the bottom of the pit, there is no other way but up.
And this is especially true for those of us who are in the animal welfare circle. We are so used to having our hopes dashed, aren’t we? We ask for animal rights, and we don’t get it. We ask for fairer and kinder laws for animals, we get a wishy-washy animal welfare bill. We ask our neighbours and friends to let the street animals live naturally as they are meant to, we get told off, our animals get abused. We, the animal-people (as we are known), are so used to being a small minority, so used to being sidelined, being told we will never get any priority, yet, we plod on, never giving up.
What makes us go on, day after day?
It is because we BELIEVE in doing what is good and what is right, even though we are a minority.
In this spirit (that we are already so accustomed to), let us carry on and continue doing what is right, for the animals and for ourselves.
Nothing can ever stop us from doing what is good and right. No one can take that spirit away from us.
Look inwards and carry on, folks…
Believe in the goodness of the universe.
If we carry goodness in our hearts, no one can ever, ever defeat us.
Nothing great is created suddenly, anymore than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer you that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen.
