ONE MAN’S MISSION TO FEED 400 DOGS
More at http://harmonyfund.org/donation/sashas-shelter.html
Sasha Pej?i? cares for 400 dogs at his breathtaking animal shelter in Serbia. The dogs eat, play, run and sleep together peacefully. Most have been taken off of the streets and nursed back to health (also spayed and neutered) and now live in a large pack in a disused riding school. At night they sleep in stables in groups of about 15. However funding has suddenly slowed to a trickle. The Austrian organization that was supporting this shelter is no longer able to meet the financial needs here and the dogs did not eat for two days recently. To understand how this situation came about, you must know how the shelter came to be.
This rescue effort was born several years ago when Sasha found four puppies near a very busy street and he moved them somewhere safer. He began feeding them and, a few days later, he found another eight puppies on the way to feeding the first four. He bought a couple of dog houses for shelter and came back every day to feed and water the dogs. People noticed this and started to drop off more and more puppies and, in no time there were 70 of them. Sasha managed to finance their care on his own found a disused riding school that he could rent and the owner agreed he could keep dogs there. A homeless man Zoran noticed him feeding the puppies and started to help.
Together, they started caring for really sick and injured dogs. Sasha would nurse them back to health and bring them to the ‘shelter’ that he and Zoran had started building. When he first rented the disused riding school it was overgrown and the roof of the stables was in a bad way. With the help of friends, family and a lot of hard work, Sasha and Zoran transformed it into the shelter that it is today. Over the last few years, these men have offered hope and healing to hundreds of dogs – some of whom were terribly injured and malnourished when they arrived. For many, this is their first ‘home’.
Dog food in Serbia is considered a novelty as most people feed their dog stale bread dunked in leftovers, therefore the cost of kibble is high. Sasha feeds the dogs kibble mixed with donated scraps of meat and baked goods from shop keepers. A couple of years ago he managed to find an organization in Austria who started to help him, but sadly this year they have not been able to cover all the costs and for the first time since Sasha has rescued his dogs, they have no food.
While volunteers build a plan for long term support here, the Harmony Fund is collecting urgently needed donations to purchase dog food and to pay for veterinary medicines. To view amazing photos of this free-range dog shelter and to make a deeply appreciated donation today, click here
