The Vegetarian Society of Singapore is starting a Veg Buddy Programme where budding vegetarians will be mentored by young vegetarians for 21 days to help them change into a vegetarian diet.
Here are the mentors:
Alex (25)
Hi! I became a vegetarian in 2010 and subsequently a vegan in July 2011. My primary motivation for being vegan is my commitment to the ideals of non-violence. I also value the clean and healthy body that a well-planned plant-based diet helps to achieve and my much higher levels of energy since adopting a vegan diet. It also helps that there are lots of good veg food to be found in Singapore. I joined the Veg Buddy program to help people transitioning to the vegetarian diet realise how easy and fun it is to go veg. ? I am currently training as a lawyer in the financial services industry. I love yoga, electronic music, reading, and searching for good food.
Hi! I’m Chetan, and I am an accidental vegetarian. I somehow managed to stop eating meat without realizing it roughly 3 years ago. Being surrounded by vegetarians meant my lunches and dinners did not include meat. I decided to make it official after a while and have never felt better. I am a very active person and have completed at least 6 marathons so far. I do dragon boating regularly and have climbed numerous peaks in Indonesia and the Himalayas. I think the Veg Buddy Program is an awesome initiative and would like to help anyone wishing to know more about vegetarianism.
I have been a vegetarian from a very young age. As a young kid growing up in India, the choice was obvious affection for animals. Coming to Singapore and being involved with VSS, the reasons became manifold – health, environment, and sustainability, to name a few. Cooking isn’t my strong suit, so I always had to hunt for places to eat. Thanks to many people that I met through VSS and the MeetUp groups, soon I realized there is no shortage of good vegetarian food in Singapore. Trained as an engineer, I work for a research lab. I like outdoor sports, tennis and badminton. I love watching movies too, especially the classics. Through the Veg Buddy Program, I hope to share my little pointers with the rest of my buddies.
Hallo! I became vegetarian at age 5 and turned vegan in 2007. Veganism addresses many issues (such as animal cruelty, ecology and famine), and it is one of the most rewarding choices I have ever made. I now have higher levels of concentration, a glow in my skin, a stronger immunity and a happier mood. I also have tons of fun making my own dairy-free desserts and food. It really goes to show that we don’t need to give up anything (including our taste buds) to lead a healthy, cruelty-free lifestyle. I believe that the Veg Buddy Program can help more people make the transition and I love contributing to that process. I am a registered nurse and currently working as a researcher in public health. I enjoy meditation, country pop music, reading, cooking and baking in my spare time.
Hi, I’ve been vegetarian since 3 years old and vegan for 2 years. Like many who embraced this lifestyle, I did it for the animals, the planet and my health. Now I’m eating much more nutritious [vegan] food compared to my vegetarian days (no bee hoon and fried [mock] char siew for me please!) and generally living smarter than before. Besides experimenting with food, (and finding ways to perfect my vegan mango lemon cheesecake), I paint, listen to all sorts of music, learn the guitar, and take photos. Currently going strong in the notorious Bachelor of Architecture programme (much thanks to my healthy diet!) During my holidays I do free demos on making delicious vegan food, so feel free to ask. ? Please check outwww.morethanveggies.tumblr.comfor my recipes.
Are you inspired to eat less meat?
You may not want to be a full-fledged vegetarian but by abstaining from meat a few times a week (or a few meals a week), you get to help many, many animals and reduce the suffering at the slaughter-houses.
The average Briton who eats meat consumes more than 11,000 animals in his lifetime.
