Ending The Dog Meat Trade In Thailand (updates From Soi Dog)

Here are some updates from Soi Dog:
I wrote to you in early March with an update on the progress being made towards bringing the illegal dog meat trade to an end. In just the few short weeks since I last wrote to you even greater progress has been made with 4 more smuggling operations intercepted.
For me, dogs like Nakhon, Phanom and little Bo underscore the importance of bringing this barbaric, inhumane and illegal trade to an end. Dogs are crammed 12 to a cage and their exposed limbs often crushed. All three poor girls have had to have limbs amputated as a result.
Nakhon, Phanom, and Bo would have had virtually no chance of being adopted within Thailand andstood little chance of survivingfor long in government shelters. Although Bo has distemper we are all hoping that she will pull through and it looks like all three girls have been found loving homes overseas.
You can see the cages used to recently transport 164 dogs in this photo.
My wife Gill managed to squeeze inside one and described the experience as extremely claustrophobic having been in the cage for just a few minutes. Imagine being one of 12 dogs squeezed into such a cage and being left there for days during the long trip from Thailand to Vietnam. Imagine 164 dogs in the back of one standard pick up truck purely because of mans greed.
Soi Dog is stepping up efforts to stop the smugglers and is recruiting additional undercover investigators as the smugglers look for new routes across the Mekong River. The cost of maintaining these undercover operations is currently around 200,000 Thai Bhat per month. We can only do this with your support.
The problem of course is what to do with the increasing number of rescued dogs, over 500 in the past week alone! The Department of Livestock who has responsibility for the dogs do their best but have no budget at all for food, drugs or materials to build new shelters. This past week we have spent approaching 1 million Thai baht on food, essential drugs and construction materials.
The Magic 1000 Club has been established to help care, feed and provide essential medicines such as vaccinations for the dogs. Many thanks to those of you who have become one of the Magic 1000! If you have not yet joined the Magic 1000 please do so today so that all the dogs can be cared for. Your monthly donation of $30 (23) or whatever you can afford goes directly to helping these dogs and will feed 4 dogs each month.
In order to care for all the dogs 1000 club members are needed. As of today 239 caring people have joined the Magic 1000 but many more members are needed now! If you have not yet become one of the Magic 1000please join today
Everybody who sees these dogs agrees that the vast majority are stolen pets, but as they are sourced from all over Thailand and then mixed together at holding centers it is impossible to know where they have come from. The snatchers target pets because they are far easier to pick up than frightened street dogs. It is their trust in human beings that seals their fate. I believe we as human beings owe it to dogs like Nakhon, Phanom and Bo to do our best to give them a future and restore their trust in us.
Thank you for your support and for taking the time to read my letter and remembering that:
“The world is a dangerous place, and not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” – Albert Einstein
Best wishes,
Our message: I am sure we are appalled and sickened by people who do this barbaric, inhumane and terrible act of torturing and slaughtering these poor defenseless dogs. It may be good to reflect upon this: Why do humans have to eat dogs or any other animal when they can eat fruit and vegetables? It boils down to greed and placating the pleasures of the tongue. Food is meant to sustain the body so that we can live.
Eat to live, not live to eat.
Please eat less meat.
There is no end of human greed unless we learn to control it. If humans have no qualms about slaughtering chickens, cows, goats, pigs, they will do likewise to rabbits, dogs, cats and any animal.
