Another Pleasant Encounter At The Side Alley Stall

About a month ago, I wrote this:http://myanimalcare.org/2013/03/02/a-lovely-little-encounter-at-the-side-alley-stall/

Today, my husband went to the stall again to look for a stainless steel bowl and had another pleasant encounter with the man who sells his wares.

He had already finished reading my (bilingual) book, Here for a Reason, and wanted to return the book to me. My husband told him he could keep the book or pass it on to his friends.

Since I lacked the Cantonese vocabulary to explain our policies to him the last time, my husband did the work for me and explained that should he require any subsidy to get street cats or dogs neutered, all he needed to do was to take the photos, get the receipts and contact us. We will help him fill up the forms, etc.

To this, he quickly said, “No, no, how can I ask for a subsidy? This is charity, it’s for people who have the heart to do it but do not have the money. I work, I should pay for it myself.”

Then he said he was looking at doing voluntary work in his free time and asked if there are any opportunities for such (not necessarily related to animals).

What a kind man. And he is a hawker who runs a side alley stall selling his wares.

It is really, really nice to meet honest people who have their values in the right place.

Is it about education, I wonder…

Yes, it is about “education” in the true sense of the word. Not about “schooling” as the two are no longer synonymous these days, sad to say.

There are the highly schooled people who display a blatant lack of education, especially moral education. And there are highly educated people who probably had minimal schooling! I would put this gentleman from the side alley stall in the second group.

It is people like him who reminds us that there is still hope for the future, whether schools exist or not!
