Perhilitan (Wildlife Dept) Came

I made an e-complaint (http://perhilitan.wildlife.gov.my/e_aduan/index.php) to seek the help of the Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) to check for nests. The complaint was made on Friday evening and first thing this morning, they called me to make an appointment to come.

It’s 10.30am now and the three officers have just left. They looked around the area but advised that it is very difficult for them to locate the nests as snakes normally nest inside water pipes or underground. It is almost impossible to locate their nests. My initial fear was when it was identified as cobra or python, then it would be best if the nest could be located and relocated to a safer area for them and us.

The officers explained that snakes generally like to nest near “cooling areas” like “kawasan air bertakung” but will also move away once their nests have been flooded. Hence, there is a tendency for them to come out after heavy rains.

That’s absolutely correct as the day the cats brought back the fourth one, it was after the thunderstorms.

The officer also explained that snakes do not “go looking” for their prey. They just wait at passages where the prey (usually rats and mice) travels through and hit their targets when they pass by. They make minimum effort. The officer said they are like “guerrillas”. Yes, an apt description, I would say.

The three officers were very nice and helpful.

I told them two experts have identified the snake to be that of the “wolf snake” species. They were not familiar with the English common name but said it is most likely the “ular selinsing” or “ular tikus”. They usually populate areas where there is “food supply” and wait for their prey (“laluan tikus”). Water ways, pipes and drains are some of the likely places.

I explained that I was worried about the safety of our pets, the community cats and young children. The officers said that cats are usually very adept at catching small snakes.

The Wildlife Dept operates only during office hours so if we need faster service, we could call the fire brigade as they provide this “snake-catching” service too. Both departments can only catch if the snake has been seen and located. They are not able to locate the nests.
