Another Dishonest Applicant

A few days ago, another case of gross dishonesty of one of our applicants was highlighted to us. We investigated further and found more proof of this applicant’s dishonesty which involved doing multiple claims, cheating and telling blatant lies.

After we started investigating, we have now received reports from several different sources confirming this applicant’s dishonesty.

Generosity is a very Malaysian trait and there would be those unsuspecting good-hearted people out there who would readily give donations without knowing that the requester is unscrupulous and dishonest. In this case, this particular applicant was getting money from various sources for the same cases and profiteering out of them. Based on what we found out, we believe this applicant’s dishonesty only started recently.

It is very disappointing that some people start off as sincere animal caregivers and rescuers but when they allow greed to get the better of them, morals are thrown out of the window and they end up as individuals who profit from the suffering of street animals. They do not seem to realise that one day their evil deed will be found out and exposed. Even if it is not, retribution has its way of surfacing when the time is ripe.

How do such dishonest people sleep at night?

Money is not the root of all evil. Greed is.

We have blacklisted this applicant with immediate effect.

We view multiple-claiming very seriously and we will be taking more stringent measures to check each case before approving it. However, what usually happens is that the applicant will claim from unsuspecting donors (who do not ask for the receipts) before finally sending the bills to us for his/her “final claim”.  We keep the receipts so “the buck stops with us”, for want of a better phrase. Still, all those unsuspecting donors would have already been taken for a ride and in the long run, such dishonest acts which stem from a total disregard of moral values will have very dire consequences on animal charity work.

It has always been our practice to publish the full names (as per the NRIC) of all applicants in our blogpost and this includes any additional nicknames that the applicants call themselves by. Before any payment is made, we also cross-check every case with other NGOs such as Scratch and PetFinder.my to ascertain if they are also funding the same case. We have been practising this cross-checking since last year, and have managed to avert double- and multiple-claiming from various NGOs. However, this does not prevent the (dishonest) applicant from first claiming from INDIVIDUALS before coming to us. We have no effective way of checking this.

Here is where we request your help: As readers of this blog, if you find that any particular applicant has already claimed from other sources, please write in and let us know. We will investigate further and do our best to find out the truth.

All dishonest applicants will be blacklisted. We view dishonesty very seriously as our work is based on goodwill. Once this goodwill is eroded or taken advantage of, it is very difficult to rebuild the trust again. In the first place, dishonesty has no place in charity work. Such defiled acts and intentions have to be nipped in the bud and we request your help in this area. We will also do our part in being more stringent now. So, if we take a little longer to pay out your claims or approve your subsidies, please bear with us.

Let us work together to curb dishonesty and cheating from destroying the good name of animal charity. We need your help.

Thank you.

A gentle reminder:

It is written clearly in our policy that our subsidies are only extended to needy individual caregivers and not to those who work in groups. For those who work in groups, we strongly encourage you to get your group registered and start your own fundraising. Once you have a group and supporters, it is not difficult to raise funds amongst friends and family. As a registered society where your accounts are audited and submitted to the Registrar, you will also gain more credibility and hence, garner more support and respect from the community. A friendly suggestion from us would be to always do within your means. We cannot save the world (as much as we aspire to), but as long as we do within our means with pure intentions, upholding moral values like honesty, integrity and trust, not only will the animals under our care benefit but we are also doing a great service in protecting the sanctity of animal charity work in our community. We owe it to the animals to preserve this noble cause so that it can continue for the years to come.

What goes around…comes around.

Righteous deeds will be rewarded with good. Evil deeds returned with evil…many times over. The worst kind would be those who are unrepentant and who find ways and means to cover up and justify their evil deed despite having been discovered.

“Learn to distinguish the difference between errors of knowledge and breaches of morality. An error of knowledge is not a moral flaw, provided you are willing to correct it; only a mystic would judge human beings by the standard of an impossible, automatic omniscience. But a breach of morality is the conscious choice of an action you know to be evil, or a willful evasion of knowledge, a suspension of sight and of thought. That which you do not know, is not a moral charge against you; but that which you refuse to know, is an account of infamy growing in your soul. Make every allowance for errors of knowledge; do not forgive or accept any break of morality.” ? Ayn RandAtlas Shrugged
